Who is she?:

The 1994 Miss World pageant winner and former model who went on to a phenomenally successful career as a Bollywood actress. Is often referred to as the most beautiful woman in the world, but has smarts to boot: She was on her way to becoming an architect when winning Miss World set her on another career path, and speaks Hindi and English, as well as Indian languages Tulu, Marathi and Tamil. She has also been an overseas ambassador for Bollywood of sorts, putting a face on the massive film industry that doesn't receive much exposure outside of India and the region.

Personal life:

Married since 2007 to Abhishek Bachchan, a Bollywood actor whose parents are legacies in the industry: popular actor Amitabh Bachchan and actress Jaya Bachchan.

Career:

Rai's first movie was the Tamil film "Iruvar" in 1997, three years after she won the Miss World title. Since then she has compiled nearly four dozen film credits, branching into Hollywood with 2004's "Bride and Prejudice" and also acting in 2009's "The Pink Panther 2." She has also been an international face for Bollywood, appearing on American programs such as "Oprah" and Martha Stewart's show. Has won numerous regional film awards including Female Star of The Decade at the International Indian Film Academy Awards.

Controversy:

In 2006 an obscenity case was filed against Rai and actor Hrithik Roshan for a kissing scene they shared in the movie "Dhoom 2," breaking the Bollywood taboo of onscreen smooches. The case, brought by an Indian lawyer, was later dismissed.
